So, the bills for GW's 7 day NICU stay are starting to roll in....and all I can say is Thank Goodness for Insurance.

The bill for JUST the Primary Neonatologist came to a whopping $18,633!  After Insurance we're down to a total of about $800.....

Now we're waiting to see the bills of his Anesthesia, Lab Procedures, Diagnostic Procedures, Assorted Interventions (O2, Nasal Cannula, Blood Cultures, Bili Lights, etc.)

I am loving United Healthcare today......

Our hospital bill for a VAGINAL birth was $30,000.  They charged for things we never even got... like they charged for an ultrasound that I supposedly had (didn't) and they charged $3K for Jules to be in the nursery, which he was NEVER in.  He never left my side except for bloodwork and the circ.  I noticed half the bill was bogus charges, but I'm not going to fight with them over it because right now we only have to pay a tiny $100 copay for the entire thing.  I just know that if I make a fuss over the extra charges (even though we're not responsible) then somehow the insurance company will decide not to pay, but the hospital will still bill, and then we WILL end up paying for them.  That's just my luck.  So, I'm staying out of it.  Let the corporations screw each other if they want.  But now I know why healthcare costs are so stupid in America... because the hospitals are robbing the insurance companies blind.. and the ins. companies LET them.

WOW!!! I am always so shocked when I here those things; paying to have babies seems outrageous to me! DH and I were joking around and saying since I had a c-section and spent 3 days in the hospital ( Canada ) we saved more money than had we been at home for those 3 days,  we had all our meals covered and we didn't spend any money on gas/groceries/diapers etc ... thank god it sounds like you guys have good insurance but $800 still seems insane for being " covered "

I've heards that the nicu is about $15k per day the baby's in there. Thank god for insurance. My ppo doesn't even make you pay your copay to go to the ob or to go to L&D - ever -its free. I found out the insurance company wants you to get good prenatal care - so the baby (most likely) won't end up in the nicu. They don't want those bills!

My vaginal delivery without anesthesia without ANY laboring time cost $13000 plus $6000 in doctor's fees.

My girls' 3 weeks in the NICU will wind up running nearly $200,000 in hospital fees, plus about 18,000 in doctor's bills.

Even with pretty good insurance we will wind up paying about $7000. Ick.
