Okay here is what happened today:  Dh, Jea and I went to a festival here in Tulsa.  It is outdoors and had rained last night so pretty muddy today.  Jea refused basically everytime she could see mud to walk through or around it.  We had to pick her up and carry her over it.  I have never noticed her doing this before.

Is this normal?  Should we be concerned?

I will say that she got into trouble last week for running outside in our backyard right before heading to church and jumping in the big middle of the mud out there.  This is the first time she was ever scolded over it and was only because her sunday school class was having pictures.  Could that be the cause of her refusal to even walk through wet mushy grass where one could see mud seeping up?

Help. I am concerned!

Hi there!

Reassurance here...

Personally, I would not be concerned. my 5 year old goes through stages of jumping happily in every mud puddle he finds... and avoiding the mud at all costs (althought MUCH more the former than the latter!)

She may be remembering she got scolded for getting in the mud before, but probably not. She may just have been overwhelmed at things happening and wanted to be carried...

Thanks so much.  I kinda figured but she had never done this before and I was concerned.  I will probably keep watch for little things like that.

(((HUGS))) I wouldn't be overly concerned. I'm sure she remembers being scolded for playing in the mud and didn't want to get in trouble. It's amazing what toddlers & preschoolers remember. :)

Lise, I wouldn't worry to much about this.  She is most likely doing that because she got in trouble the last time.  I would just reassure her that she can only play in the puddles when she has play clothes on.
