Hoping someone might have some experience with this...

Next summer is a big family trip to Hawaii.  I bought tickets for DS, who will turn 2 a week before we leave, for the long East Coast to Honolulu leg of the trip.  However we will be doing some island hopping and I did NOT buy him a seat for those flights.

Do you think I'll get caught / get in trouble?  Has anyone flown with a LO and been asked for proof of age?

Thanks!

Hello, and welcome to the board.

I don't know what to tell you about the age issue, but my neighbor gave me some great ideas about keeping toddlers occupied on long flights.

She goes to the dollar store and gets a bunch of cheap toys and puts them in her carry on.  When the kids get restless, she lets them pick a new toy to open.  I would also bring a portable DVD player and some good kid friendly movies.

Good luck, and enjoy your trip.

Is he big for his age?  We flew to Florida from PA via Dulles last December with my then 22 month old on our laps (mostly mine, but DH took a turn or two).  We were not asked for proof of age, but she is on the small side.  I would peruse the airline's website to see if there's any information on the 2 year-old age limit.  Good luck and aloha!

I will say that there are an amazing number of "large 23-month-olds" at Sesame Place, where kids over age 2 have to pay for a full-price ticket.  I've never seen anyone get challenged.  However, for airlines you usually have to have ID for each passenger as part of the security routine.  Don't know if that applies to tourist island-hop flights.  I'd ask one of the tour companies.

That said, better you than me.  I flew with ODS on my lap when he was 14 months old, I am NEVER doing that again.  Coach is cramped enough as it is, and I was afraid the person in front of me was going to crush his head every time he reclined his darned seat.  (Mind you, clearly a jerk to be doing that with the baby behind him..) We're taking a cruise out of NY for our next vacation explicitly to avoid needing a flight with our boys.  It's that or car trips for us until they're bigger.
