Hi,

I was just wondering.. does any of you give over the counter medicines to AB if he/she's sick?

My AB is sick due to fever, vomiting and diarrhea since Friday. So on Friday, I called the nurse at peds office and followed her instructions. By evening she was bit better. But then she continued to vomit and poop often whole day today. And needless to say all of us were quite miserable..   I couldn't take Dr's appointment as it was sat today.

So.. I ran to pharmacy and picked meds for anti vomiting and diarrhea. And gave it AB as per the pharmacist's instructions. She seems to be better now. And sleeping well.

I was justwondering if it's Ok to give over the counter meds? does any of you give to your AB?

Thanks!

-Aditi

I don't know about OTC meds, but I was told by my dr that diarrhea is a good thing in babies, as long as they are not getting severely dehydrated. It is happening to flush a virus out of a child's system, and while 2 days seems like a long time to be experiencing it, it's really not. Grace had vomiting and diarrhea for a week in total a couple months ago, and while it was an incredibly long week for everyone, she did not become dehydrated, and was able to shake it. We visited the drs every day in this time for constant check ups. So, I would not give those OTC, but honestly, you have to follow your own gut and the advice of your ped.

I would give no food, just water by mouth, and very small amounts at a time - a tsp every half hour will keep your baby properly hydrated without overloading their stomachs and making them vomit it back up. My ped told us nothing by mouth except water for 4 days, and then afterward the vomiting was under control, still no milk or milk products or anything heavy for another day after that, to help her stomach ease back into food, etc.

Like I said, follow your own instincts, and talk to your ped before trying any new med with AB. This is just my experience and my opinion!

HTH!

I give Tylenol or Motrin for a fever and Pediacare for cough or cold, but that is it.  Even though the docs say that it is doubtful that Pediacare works, it does for Matthew.  It dries up his runny nose and quiets his cough. Matthew had a severe case of vomiting and diarrhea about 1-1/2 months ago and I took him to the doctor and immediate care and they said that they don't give anything for diarrhea, especially, it needs to run through their system naturally, like Catherine said.  The doc at the immediate care center did give medicine for the nausea, because he was dehydrated and if he vomited a few more times we'd have to admit him to the hospital.  I would consult your doctor before giving meds though.  Most doctors are on call, so you can call with questions, even after hours.

i give my kids meds. cold medicine when they have colds. fever medicine when they are feverish.... but for vomiting and the runs... i usually give them pedialyte every so often to keep them from geting dehydrated.  no meds for that. since thats the body's way of getting rid of soemthing. be it a virus or something that they ate that didnt agree with them... so i let it run its course but keep them hydrated...

I am giving her lot of pedialyte and homemade electrolyte liquid often. But then.. I might sound dumb.. but I couldn't see her in such condition. Mainly because she was not eating anything.
Anyways.. Thanks a lot Catherine, Jenny and Heather for such a great advice. I think, I am unnecessary worrying as this is our first time dealing with diarrhea for more than two days..
She seems to be better today. I'll take an appointment tomm. if things won't get better.

Thanks a lot once again!
