Griffin goes to school 3 days per week, where they have nap time from 12:30-2:30. Since going back after the August vacation, he's been skipping nap almost every day. At home I usually make him stay in his room starting at 2, and he eventually falls asleep after much protest. He'll then sleep past 5 and I have to wake up a very grumpy child. He stays in a bad mood for a long time, and goes to bed easily around 8pm.

I really love the break (especially with my 9 week old to care for!) but am thinking of giving up on naptime. Wondering what all the other SFs are doing.

Logan takes a nap every day.. at home its typically 2.5-3 hours long. I think at daycare its about 2hours. Logan still needs his nap every day... and I'm not ready to give it up! He goes down between 12-12:30 and I get him up between 3-3:30.

Ryan went through a period of not napping at home for several weeks and it DROVE ME INSANE. This was early in my pregnancy, when I was crazy exhausted and just felt all-around awful. He would still nap at preschool, where he goes three days a week, so I got that break...but I was working (I am a writer and work at home) so it wasn't like I was totally "free," kwim?

Then I discovered that if I took Ryan out either all morning and then for lunch, OR if I took him out for a couple of random errands after lunch, he'd fall asleep in the car around 1:30/2 p.m. So lo and behold, that is my strategic way of getting him to nap! He NEVER transferred to bed when he was an infant, but now I bring him inside and he curls up on the sofa and is out for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, sometimes longer! Whew! He goes to bed between 8:30 and 9 p.m., and gets up around 6:45/7 a.m.

So...in answer to your question, Ryan obviously still needs his nap, though even when he DIDN'T have it several months ago, he'd be OK (not super-cranky most days).

I love the idea of "quiet time" in his room even if he doesn't nap, and hopefully once my new baby comes, I'll be able to institute that a little if I can't get all of us out of the house for the strategic nap!

Good luck!

my sf just recently gave up napping, for the most part. i also have a 15 month old, and although she would mostly stay in bed, she would play so loudly that she'd keep him awake - they share a room (and i've always made them nap at the same time). so, for the past week or so, she has "rest time" in my room during her brother's afternoon nap. she does great at staying in there for about an hour (with books and a few toys), and her brother gets to sleep too. some days, she falls asleep, but then she's usually awake till closer to 9. her bedtime is around 7:30, and she'll stay in bed, but be awake much later if she's napped. but, it's all relative to how active she's been.
