So last Thursday I dropped my son off at DC as usual. The director/owner was there and she seemed like something was wrong - she's normally very bubbly and chatty and this day she was very quiet. So I drop him off and head to work, and when I get to work I see the local paper with this headline "Day Care director admits to fraud". Yup, you guessed it, that was her.
Apparently on Wednesday she was arrested for defrauding DSS out of $11,000 by billing them for kids who were not attending. It should have been a felony but she managed to plead down to a misdemeanor if she pays the money back. She will be sentenced next week and could go to jail for up to a year. She is also under investigation to see if she'll lose her license.
Anyway, so I let him stay there on Thursday and I even took him back on Friday, since we had already paid for the week and I didn't have anywhere else to take him. But I have now found another center to take him to (which is a nicer one anyway) and he starts tomorrow.
When I spoke to one of the employees on Friday she said "Oh don't worry, we're not going to lose our license" and acted as if nothing was wrong, but from what I hear a lot of the parents are pulling their kids out. At any rate, I think I am most annoyed by the fact that she never said anything, offered any kind of explanation or notified people. According to the paper, she has been under investigation since January. And it was on the front page! I mean I know it didn't have anything to do with the care of the kids, but clearly everyone has heard about it by now, you would think she would send a letter home or something to reassure people.
Either way I am taking my business elsewhere because if she is desperate for money, who knows how else she might be cutting corners, and I don't want anybody watching my kid who has questionable ethics.
I am just wondering what you guys think of the situation, would you let your kid continue attending if she somehow manages to keep her license?
