Anne, I hope you don't mind if I offer another alternative :D  (since there are 10 million ways to do everything in PS).

You can also use a large soft brush from your eraser tool on your toolbar and go around the edge of the image you are "cutting out" to create a gradual decrease in pixels, which gives the soft look.  For imperfections, you can use the dodge tool (also on the toolbar) with the same size brush to lighten the edges.

This method was used in the sig I'm wearing.
