H1N1 Warning for Healthy People

Late Friday morning I was notified that my cousin had died due to complications of H1N1.  He was a perfectly healthy 33 yr old student at a State University.  I do not want to feed the panic or media hype, but I want people to know that even if you don't fit the high risk category things can and do happen.  Pay attention to what is happening to the affected person, if it doesn't sit right, get medical attention.  Hydration is the biggest hurdle initially due to the high fever and other symptoms.  If you've had illness in your family, throw out your tooth brushes and get new ones.  Wash your hands like never before.  Cough into your shoulder, not your hands.

Sadly encephilists of the brain was the major complication in this case, which is extremely rare.  The initial autopsy gives us no answers, he did not have an undiagnosed medical condition, hopefully the toxicology report will shed more light on what actually happened.  Its scary that it happened to him and medical attention was not delayed, he became ill on a Thursday, admitted to the hospital on Sunday, and was gone early Friday morning.  The hospital tried their best, but I think even they didn't know what to do when it went rampant.  Lungs started getting into trouble, every test they ran came back negative.  The medical professional are practicing medicine, they don't know everything, sometimes you have to be a strong patient advocate in order to make things happen.

Between this and my Mom had her right knee replaced on Monday, I will be off line for a bit.

Oh, no, I'm so sorry. As I told my ex's wife (who has it), pay attention and do NOT delay seeking help, because H1N1 seems to be benign (if crap) for most people, but when it goes south, it's goes south fast and BAD. There's really no "wait and see" window like most of us tend to try before heading to the ER.

I had knee replacement surgery a couple years ago; if you have any questions, feel free to ask.
