Hello! My name is Meaghen. Im a healthy 24 yr old, and Im expecting my 3rd baby! This thursday I will be 4 months, Im super excited!

Well last week I got tested for the Quad testing. I was 15 weeks. I got a very scary call from my OB office saying that it came back POSITIVE. WHAT?! I was NOT expecting this! I have 3 yr old twin boys who are so perfect, so it was weird to hear this. Hearing this brought so many tears and thoughts to me. It doesn't run in my family, nor does it run in his family, so that is why Im so confused on how this came back positive?? My doctor also reminded me that there are alot of "false" positives w/ this test, and that is why some mothers choose not to take it. I have also, already since yesterday, talked to a couple of people and they also said that there results came back positive & there babies are perfectly healthy! I go in for an appt tomorrow, they want to do an amnio, but Im very un-sure about that. I want to get another blood test & get a higher ultrasound done. Im looking to talk to people who have went through this scary expierence or anyone who has heard this happening to someone. Or anyone who has alot of support for me =) I pray day & night, and I have a good feeling about this. So Im trying to stay very positive right now!

Hi, Meaghan-

I would definitely call your doctor and ask a lot of questions!  First of all, there really is no such thing as a positive or negative on that test.  The result should be a number that tells you the odds of something being wrong with the baby.  Also, the reason it is called a Quad Screen is because it just screens for possibile issues but it doesn't really give you any definite answers.  Like you said, a lot of people do get false results.

I think it makes sense to ask for a high-level ultrasound before proceeding with an amnio.  I don't know if another blood test would help because you would likely get the same results.  But those are both good questions to ask your doctor.

Here is a really good article that talks more about prenatal tests.  The quad screen is explained on page 3.

Good luck- please let us know how things go from here.

Hi there! Thanks so much for helping me out! I actually went in Wed. with my mom, and asked TONS of questions. My levels for my age came back high for Downs, and my ratio was 1:111. So after much disscusion I decided to do the amnio. It scared me SO much but he's done over more than 1,000 so I really trusted him. It went great, not much pain at all just a pinch. So now I have to wait 2 weeks! I think its going to be the biggest 2 weeks of my life! LOL. I have alot of people praying and Im thinking lost of positive thoughts so I had a good feeling that my baby is going to perfectly healthy!

That article hepled alot thank you!! =)

Meaghan-

I'm glad you found the article helpful.  One thing I wanted to point out that odds of 1:111 is less than1%, which means that you still have over a 99% chance that your baby is fine.  Maybe focusing on that number will help you get through the next 2 weeks.  It sounds like you have a great support system as well.

Good luck to you and please don't forget to come back if you have more questions or to update us.
