Hi. First of all, I want to say that I'm relatively new here. I think I've only responded on one topic a few weeks ago. I'm very active on another abortion board on a different site. Anyway, I have a few questions that have come from my many debates with PL people. So, hopefully you won't mind answering. I'll sure try lol.
Why does it bother you to hear and use the technical words embryos and fetuses? Why the insistence of using the word baby? Do you not recognize the word baby as an emotional, yet not technical term, which is used in many situations where it's not in the least bit accurate?
It doesn't bother me to hear and use the technical terms. I think we use what we are comfortable with. If a pregnancy is something that is unwanted, then we may be more apt to use the term fetus as opposed to baby in a way to separate ourselves from the situation. It is a way of protecting our minds, hearts and souls from what is going on at the moment.
Think of it this way, will you be more willing to in effect destroy a clump of cells called a fetus (my ex used to use the term clump of cells, so thats why I'm using that) or a baby?
Why do we say words like we are expecting a baby, going to have a baby, having a baby, the baby is due on, etc, etc - All of which are indicative of a future occurrence?
Because that is the common outcome of a pregnancy in most circumstances, that a pregnancy will end with living and breathing baby. Just like you said yourself, indicative of a future occurrence.
Why do we measure how old we are from our BIRTH and not conception? Do you add on an extra 9 mos (or however long your gestation was) to your age?
Interesting question, but most women do not know the exact date of the conception unless using IVF.
What does birth mean to you?
Birth means to me the physical detatchment of mother and child. The emotional attachment, at least for me, was much earlier.
When you see a pregnant woman, do you say/think "There they are." or "There she is."
I actually think in terms of "There they are".
