I am the parent of an 11 yr old just Dx with ADHD (non hyperactive) last spring. I have been going through the motions since 2nd grade. He is currently taking 18 mg of Strattera. My concern is that he may need to have his dosage increased. Out Psych left the practice and we never received notice. I am currently looking for someone new. Any suggestions would be great!

HI, and welcome

Glad you joined us! I also have a child with ADHD/innattentive, she is 12 and doing wonderfully!

How long has he been taking Straterra? it does take 6-8 weeks to see full results, and only if they are at the target dose for about 4 weeks.

Straterra is a great med, and YES you will have to increase. What is his weight? How was it ramped?  Strat is dosed by weight, not by symptoms, and will not work properly unless it is at the target dose.  SIde effects of  the dose being too high are not desirable either.,Target is 1.2-1.8 mgs per kilo of body weight,

for example: child weighs 55 lbs-( 25. kilo), Strat dose would be between 30-45 mgs. It would be started at 10 mgs for a few days to a week, then slowly ramped to 18, 20, 25, 30 mgs etc until target is reached.

I would suggest finding another Psych, and if necessary print the dosing info off the Strat website. Good luck and come back and share!

He weighs about 50 lbs. He has been on it since April, but we were told by psych that he didn't need it during the summer. He started at 10 and then after a week we were bumped to 18 but only because symptoms were not getting better. I am going to try to get him to a new psych ASAP. There is another in the practice, but I am not found of him which is why I am looking.

OK

Strat is not a med that can be stopped during the summer, or on holidays or weekends. It is Not a stimulant med( it a Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor), it HAS to be in the system continuously to work properly. it is not dosed by symptoms, so raising from 10 to 18 and then stopping was pointless, so to speak. It is also a med that sometimes has to be monitored, has he had bloodwork? I would print the dosing info from their website and take it in with you, I have had to do it myself.

I would definitely suggest seeing someone else, the dose he is taking is not  therapeutic. If you aren't seeing results the dose is the reason.

Good luck, it is so frustrating, i know

Thanks. He is better than he was without it, but I am noticing that there could still be some improvement. He is overly emotional and that worries me.
