Weaning an older toddler?

A friend of mine is trying to wean her 3 year old.  She is ready but baby is NOT.  She's not a fan of the "tough love" approach that most people are recommending for her.  Any advice for her for how to "gently encourage" weaning for a 3 year old?  If it matters, she just turned 3 last week, so she's a "young" 3 year old...

I just weaned my youngest DD when she turned 3.  I started letting her know a few months in advance that we were going to be done after her birthday.  We talked about it a lot.  She was still not ready to wean at that time, but I found out shortly after her birthday that I was pregnant again.  We did set up a big reward for when she was finished.  It didn't stop her from asking every night for about a week and a half.  I tried giving her other activities and or snacks/drinks when she asked to nurse.  Sometimes it helped, other times, not so much.  I got DH more involved in doing things with her to preoccupy her.

I would have caved and allowed her to nurse in the evenings for a while longer if I hadn't gotten pregnant again.  I was sore and didn't want to nurse two while pregnant (her 17 month old brother is still nursing).  I think it's best to try to cut out nursing sessions slowly.  It's easier on everyone.

Assuming there's not timeframe and she just wants to be moving towards weaning....

A "don't offer don't refuse" policy can help nudge a kid towards weaning. For a more active approach I'd figure out what needs nursing is filling and find other ways to meet those needs (eg if she nurses when bored then finding things she likes to do more etc). I might shuffle they day's routine so as to be out and about at times when she nurses most.

She could also try to cut down on the duration of nursing sessions.  I don't do this all the time b/c I'm not trying to wean, but when DD has been nursing a lot and I'm getting a little weary of it, I tell her we're going to count to ten.  She usually stops nursing before I even get to 10.
