this is precisely why I want to be an LC

My SIL had a baby yesterday. As in  when I went to see the LO he was not even 24 hours old.

He only had one super good nursing yesterday (thank the good Lord they got her nursing within 20 min. and didn't take him away first)

He nursed for literally 45 minutes.

Today after his circ he hasn't been nursing too well. He'll suck for a minute and fall asleep. But he's obviously getting stuff as he's already pooped like 5 times and peed 3. However, the LC at the hospital came in and did her usual spiel and said how is nursing going. My SIL was like well he's drowsy, but I think the circ really has made him sleepy. The lady was like well I guess it could. How often has he nursed? And my SIL says often, but he doesn't suck for long.

The LC proceeds to check the baby's fontanel to see if he's dehydrated and is like if he doesn't nurse in the next 30 min. I might need to take him with me to the nursery for a bottle.

Nevermind the fact that his fontanel showed no signs that he was beginning to dehydrate. Nevermind the fact that the kid was peeing and pooping more than is required for a new new new born baby.

Oh also, at his circ, they fricking gave the baby a bottle of sugar water. (the  nurses, not my SIL) Um. perhaps that is why the kid is sleepy. He already got filled up on sugar water. Which my SIl told them not to do and so did her mother.

I mean honestly, how annoying. I'm not even a certified LC and I knew more than that stupid lady. I am really beginning to think that becoming an LC might be something I'd really like to do. Apparently any old dummy can be one.

What horrible advice! My DD hardly did any nursing in her first 24 hours. I was so concerned, but the LC said it was normal - they're so worn out from being born! I was really happy with the knowledge of both the LC and nurses. I gave birth at two different hospitals and got great help and advice both times. It does exist!

I think we can safely say the "LC" took the weekend course, and is not an IBCLC.

Circumcision is known to mess up breastfeeding. I looked for a link, briefly, but didn't find one.

Here's a page I came across, the podcasts look cool.

I was always told not to expect massive amounts of feeding in the first day for two reasons - one, they're knackered from the birth and two, they're born 'full', so they don't really need it.
