My DD is about 2 1/2 months, she has been nursing well with some rough patches here and there. Right now she is refusing to eat from the left side. I try to put her on and she just starts to throw a fit. As soon as I put her to the right she latches on and starts to eat, once she is finished I try to put her back to the left and she'll cry a little but will eventually latch on and will eat for a minute or two. Should I just not even bother if it is upsetting her enough? We were just at the dr's office for a problem with her right eye which was cleared up when we got there, but the dr checked her ears and didn't say anything about a possible ear infection. Do you have any ideas about what could be going on?

Well, I'm trying to think of the nicest way of telling you that you're doing the right thing, so um. You're doing the right thing! :)

That said, sometimes babies go through phases where they prefer one side to the other. Since she doesn't have an ear infection apparently, maybe you could try a different position while nursing? Do you think she would feed off of both sides if you were nursing lying down?

Other than that (and I'm sure someone else will be along with more words of wisdom than I have!), sometimes babies just eat off of one side and totally refuse the other. It makes mom lopsided, but the baby can still get more than enough nourishment. One of my friends had this happen and her daughter was 22 or 25 lbs by the time she was a year old. All off of the left breast. :)

Hi! Sometimes babies just like to lie on one particular side.  So if she latches well on the right, then just slide her over to the left.  You'll go from cradle hold to football hold.  If she does that just fine, then start her on the left in the foot ball hold and see how that goes.  Good luck!
