Wondering if anyone else has dealt with similar issues...

Lily is 6 wks old. At her one-month appt, I mentioned I thought maybe I noticed some blood (red) and mucous in her stool. Her poop is also consistently green and probably a little diarrhea-like, though I know BF babies can have loose stools. He tested her diaper, and it was positive for blood. The pedi said most likely it's a milk allergy, and b/c food allergy tests at this age can be unreliable he suggested an elimination diet for me. It's been almost the full two weeks that milk protein can take to leave my system and no improvement. I've been pretty diligent too, even eliminating things cooked with any kind of milk.

I talked to the pedi again tonight, and he mentioned that about 50% of infants with milk allergy can't tolerate soy either, and especially with no cow's milk, I've really been eating a lot of soy, so that is going to be a pain to quit. (Ugh, black coffee!)

Has anyone dealt with this allergy or symptom, and if so how did it finally clear up? And how did you not lose your mind with nothing good to eat? I plan to BF for at least a year (DS nursed for 23 months), so it looks like this will be a long-term deal for us.

The first thing I would check for would be anal fissures. If there are none, then yes, milk/soy tend to go hand in hand and can lead to the same thing. Some kids I know also have corn allergies.

Have you tried the Dr. Sear's elimination diet or just a milk elimination diet? http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T041200.asp

Also, have you been looking for the hidden dairies? Those sneak in everywhere!

And for your coffee you could try rice milk, almond milk or coconut milk. :)

It takes two weeks for the dairy to leave your system, then two weeks to leave your baby's, so I would give it another couples weeks.  Also, soy and dairy often go hand in hand (not sure why, I guess the protiens are similar).

My friend had to be on a no dairy no soy diet.  She had to go so far as to eliminate "casings" and other dairy byproducts from her diet.  This left out most boxed meals.  It's difficult, but doable.  And worth it in the end.  Good luck!

PJ was intolerant to dairy for his first 6 months. It will become second nature after a while. I still know what foods have hidden dairy in them. I thought it was just easier to make everything myself.

Here's a great list of all the different names that dairy can be called: http://www.godairyfree.org/Food-to-Eat/Food-Label-Info/Dairy-Ingredient-List.html

Hi. Just wanted to let u know we're also having to eliminate dairy. I can tell a huge difference in my babies fussiness and the amount he spits up now that I've eliminated dairy... I think I'm also gonna have to eliminate soy too, b/c the last 2 times I had a bowl of cereal with Silk  my baby fussed and spitted up the entire rest of the day.

I've been eating mainly meat and veggies and fruits, oatmeal, pasta.  I haven't been able to find a dairy free butter in my stores yet, but their is one I think it's called fleishman's unsalted butter, or something like that.

Good luck.
