Pre-Delivery Concern - HELP!

Okay - every pregnant woman stresses about something with the upcoming birth, whether it's the first or fourth. I am no exception here - LOL! I am stressed about having milk or colostrum to offer our baby when she arrives. A little back ground. When I had #3, Bregan, he was induced at home at 38 weeks with Cytotec (please read my blog for his story and passing if you are interested). I never got to put him to the breastfeed for feeding, so I pumped. It took 2 1/2 days and loads of water and Fenugreek to produce at least a drop of colostrum. That was uber painful like that too since I couldn't hold him or see him each time I pumped (he was in the NICU with an IV). My milk finally did come in on about day 3, but then Bregan passed away when he was 3 1/2 days old.
My big concern is that I will not have anything to offer this baby when she arrives. I will be induced with pitocin at 39 weeks 1 day at our hospital which is an hour away (hence the induction).
Can I take Fenugreek or pump a little before I give birth to stimulate things? I don't want to over stimulate myself, since I have very quick labors, but I am worried about my production. When I had DD#1, she was a breeze! I put her on the breast, she latched and ate! Same with DS#1 and I have inverted nipples (though they do come out when stimulated). I did pump some before I had DD#1 because she was overdue and I was trying some nipple stimulation and I actually got about an ounce of colostrum.
I am just worried and concerned. The hospital I am going to is very pro-breastfeeding and I am sure they will have someone there, I just don't want the stress. I want to enjoy our new DD and relax and feel confident. Thank you!

I'm sorry for your loss. I have a Jan 09 baby and lurked on the Dec 08 board, I remember your story.

This experience will probably be closer to your first two babies, since this baby will be able to nurse. The pump is not as good as the baby at removing milk and stimulating production. Adding the stress of your traumatic delivery and a NICU stay probably added to your supply issues.

(((hugs))) I'm so sorry for your loss.

My thoughts are that you were so stressed over what was happening with your baby that you couldn't produce milk.  Stressful situations can have major effects on our supplies.  Assuming this birth is typical the you will have no problem making enough milk.  It will be like the other births.  I don't recommend pumping because that could kick start labor.

Good luck and I wish you a safe and healthy delivery!

I can certainly understand your concern after that experience.  The good news is that you probably already have colostrum, since in most cases the body begins producing it by the 3rd trimester or sometime after 20 weeks.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to pump colostrum because it is thick and produced in small amounts.  Research is showing that moms with preterm babies or who are having to pump exclusively do better with a combination of pumping to stimulate the breast, and hand expression to remove the colostrum.  Between the difficulty of pumping and the stress of the concern over your baby, I'm not surprised that it was difficult for you to get any colostrum out.  It must have been very heartbreaking for you at the time.  I can not even begin to imagine what you went through.

Fenugreek is not recommended during pregnancy.  And you don't want to pump right now due to the risk of stimulating labor.

Wow. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Just out of curiosity, why are you being induced?
