In light of all the talk about Baby Einstein and refunds, the kids and TV debate has been resurrected.

Here's a link to an interesting article from this week's Los Angeles Times on the topic:  http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-kids-tv27-2009oct27,0,2531927.story

From the article:

More than an entire day -- that's how long children sit in front of the television in an average week, according to new findings released Monday by Nielsen.

The amount of television usage by children reached an eight-year high, with kids ages 2 to 5 watching the screen for more than 32 hours a week on average and those ages 6 to 11 watching more than 28 hours. The analysis, based on the fourth quarter of 2008, measured children's consumption of live and recorded TV, as well as VCR and game console usage.

"They're using all the technology available in their households," said Patricia McDonough, Nielsen's senior vice president of insights, analysis and policy.

"They're using the DVD, they're on the Internet. They're not giving up any media -- they're just picking up more."

How much TV time, if any, do you allow for your children?  When did they start watching TV?  Do you place any restrictions on television?

This seems to be a really hard issue for most moms I think. We normally let the kids watch about an hour of tv when we get home from work/school... while I"m getting dinner ready and trying to get everything together for the evening. On the weekends, it really just depends. At 3- going on 4- Joseph is just now getting into tv and he'll watch it off and on if it is on Noggin as he plays. Caroline? Now that's a different story all together. That girl would lounge on the couch and watch tv all day if I let her. And there are those times when you have to get the kitchen cleaned, or would like to be able to wash your hair without a child stuck to your hip KWIM?

Oh, ITA about needing to get things done without a kid stuck to you!  My two are little shadows so TV rarely helps me.  At least Lucy is at the age (20 months) where she wants to be all up in her (5 YO) brother's business, but he doesn't always appreciate that.  If I want to take a shower alone, it's not going to happen.  Lucy always follows me into the bathroom and closes the door.  She usually brings a peg puzzle and a book with her to keep herself occupied.  I'd love to take a shower one day and not have to worry about a little peeper!
