As you know I've been worried about my ds and have been on this board asking questions.  Once again he started to drink more and in the morning  his urine had a sweet smell, my dh finally smelled it the other morning he referred to it smelling like maple syrup.  My mom gave me some her urine strips to check for sugar in the urine and came back pos this morning (out of his pull up) so I tested 5 more times (out of the same pull up) and they showed the color purple.  Some were darker than others but all had a shade of the purple on it.  I was able to get him to go in his potty and that came back normal.  At first I thought maybe the pull up is made w/ something that could cause a false pos but I tested his twin brothers pull up and his came back normal.   What does this mean?  I'm calling his ped but all of you have given me great advice in the past so I thought I'd ask here also.

HI, I'm sorry you are dealing with this. There is NO OTHER reason other than diabetes for sugar to be in the urine. That sweet smell you are smelling is ketones, he needs to be seen ASAP, once ketones develope a child can get very sick very quickly, especially small children. If the pediatrican doesn't listen to you, take him to the ER. If you have access to a glucose meter, check him, with clean DRY hands (wet hands will make the number lower.) There is nothing in a pullup that will make a urine stick show sugar, except if there was sugar in the urine. Also, urine sticks are hours behind because the urine is the last to show.. blood is a lot faster...PLEASE get him to a dr... if you need to, give him a high carb drink before the dr's office, in early stages of diabetes the blood sugar will eventually come down between meals/snacks because the pancreas has time to catch up.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't let this go, he needs to be seen!

Hi Amy,

Just wanted to ditto what Kim said. You need to get your son to the hospital ASAP; hopefully you are already there. There are a few other diseases related to sugar in the urine, but they are rare (and have other more obvious symptoms) and diabetes is the most likely cause.

Some kids show very few signs when diabetes begins - with my own son, we did not notice any signs until the day we dx'd him, he was crying for no reason (he was 8 years old) and drinking straight out of the tap - no sugar in his urine but his blood glucose was 28 (over 500).

Please let us know how things are going.

BTW, Great siggie, your kids are adorable!

Julie

I'm so lost in all of this.  When he was checked yesterday his numbers were fine, it was a while since he had ate though.  I don't understand why he would have 7 pos urine test (I did another one later) but by the time he gets his blood sugar checked it's w/ in normal range?!  I've been worried about him for a while now all this just gives me a horrible feeling and I don't know what to do.  The docs don't listen and I know there's something that just isn't right.  Even my dh, my mother, and some other relatives are noticing it now.  Like the smell and I showed all the pos test strips to my dh and mother so they saw how pos they were also.  I have a headache from worrying about this and I feel like crying I'm so frustrated w/o getting an answer.  I don't know where to go from here, like I said it's not just me anymore seeing signs and symptoms that would point to diabetes.
