I haven't posted here in a while but I wanted to tell you what has been going on.  The boys had blood work done (not glucose b/c at the peds office didn't find sugar in their urine) I think I may have mentioned that they think the boys have some type of problem w/ their amino acids.  We are waiting to be seen by a Geneticists for further testing.  The boys began to have have frequent urination and thrist again and the ped sent us home w/a  meter to monitor them since we have caught a few high numbers on our meter we have at home, we are also going to see an endo but I didn't realize how long to takes to get an appt.  The boys numbers  have been creeping up over the past week and a half.  Numbers were always around 100-120 (not fasting,2-3 hrs aftr eating or drinking) , now I've started to see them be in the high 140's and high 150's well after 2 hrs from eating/drinking. We do still get normal readings but as time goes on there seems to be more and more higher ones. I do make sure their fingers are clean.  I'm not sure what this means or if it is normal,  or maybe it's caused from something else that's going on w/ their amino acids. I'm waiting to get into the specialist but have so many ?'s.  What do you think of these numbers and is it normal that the ped is having us monitor them w/o a dx?

In my other post I asked about their glucose readings rising on our meter we have at home from our ped.  Last night my one ds Nick had a reading higher than I have ever seen w/ him.  It was around 10pm he had a couple cinnamon graham crackers w/ a small amount of yogurt at 8pm right before bed. At 10pm he was 175, I thought that was high so I retested on a different finger and it was 180.  I waited about 30 min and checked him again (on another different finger) and he was 177. I checked myself to make sure the meter was working correctly which I assume it was b/c I was 95.  I didn't check my other ds who also has been having high readings b/c he woke up and I only check them when they are asleep b/c they are scared.  I'm not comfortable w/ poking their fingers w/ them getting so upset and not even being dx.  I know if they end up really having diabetes that I need to check them, I hate the feeling that they are so scared of the finger pokes and it might not even be something that will have to get use to so that's why I do it when they are asleep and they don't even know.  In the past 3 weeks that I've been checking blood sugar readings they have been getting higher I'm not sure what to do.  I'm still waiting for our appt w/ the Geneticsitis and the endo I'm scared the ped is looking past something w/ all these high readings.  At what point should I take matters into my own hands?  When do I get medical help if my ds needs it?  I've learned the signs of what can happen to a child w/ constant high bs levels but I want to avoid my kids getting that sick if at all possible. With the numbers he had last night should have I done more rather than "wait and see"? I feel so bad that they are sick and I don't know what to do. They don't seem sick, they do drink alot and I had to buy extra protection diapers so they wouldn't leak through them anymore.  Their drinking and wetting could have something to do w/ the amino acid problem (their ped didn't say that I'm just assuming).  I'm sorry if I'm bothering all you parents and if you have read this thanks for reading!  I just need some advice while I wait to be seen by the specialist.

When is your appointment w/ the endo? 170/180 is high (and is considered to be the same number, meter can have up to a 20% error in reading, so all three numbers are near each other and within the error margin.. it also shows that it wasn't a false higher reading.. ) are you sure his hands were clean.. this will be the FIRST question you get asked when a child has a higher reading.. if they aren't cleaned w/ soap and water then there is a possibility that there is food on the fingers causing the high bg.. second, log the numbers (if you aren't already) w/ times and how far after a meal it was.. my older daughter is constantly high at night, she is non-d, but its not uncommon for her to be 180 at bedtime.. she will fall over night.. have you checked waking numbers? These are usually the last to go w/ type 1 developing because the body has all night to catch up to the higher bg..

If either of your sons start to get flu like symptoms it may NOT be the flu, it could be something called DKA, which is very dangerous if not treated asap.. if you see mass amounts of drinking, throwing up, lethargy, sweet or acidic breath, anything that isn't right, take them to the ER right away.. if you get a number over 200, call the pedi right away.. if your meter ever says "HI" its NOT being nice.. it means to the bg is over 500 or 600, depending on the meter.. if you get a HI, I urge you NOT to freak out, but rewash hands and check again, if you get a HI again, call the pedi right away and head to the ER...  Unfortunatily they can't dx type 1 until a random bg is over 200.. sometimes they claim that home meters aren't accurate (yet, we all trust our children's lives to them, so they certaintly are accurate).. push for testing, if you feel something isn't right, don't take an answer that sounds silly or inaccurate, a LOT of pedi's don't even know the signs of type 1..

Let us know how things are going. I hope you get answers soon!

Thank you sooo much for answering my post.  Our appt is the second week of Nov but we still haven't heard back w/ an appt for the Geneticists.  We've been being pointed in so many different directions since this started over the summer, I just don't know what to think anymore.  I checked them today during their nap around 3:30pm and it was 2hrs after having anything to eat/drink, Nick's bg was 161 ( I actually checked his toe,and rechecked).  I know that's not super high but it is higher than the average, is testing toes okay to do?  I've heard that some parents use toes when their kids are sleeping.  Thanks again for the advice, It feels nice to have a place to come to for advice I can truly trust!
