My son just turned 5. He has never had a problem with bedwetting, it was pretty easy to potty train him. He's only ever had maybe a handful of accidents at night, if that.

What my problem is, is my son keeps for some reason peeing in the corner of his room where his mattress is. It's so bad now that an entire section of his mattress is soaked with urine. I am going to have hard work ahead of me to get it out of there. My boyfriend also found a small lego box that he'd peed in one day not long ago.

My son has never done anything like this, except when he was initially being potty trained. And that was at least 3 years ago now. I suspect that he's doing this because he is too afraid to get up in the night to go pee. He is afraid of the dark, even when I used to use a night light in his room.

There have also been a few times, that I know of where he will come home from kindergarden and go into his room and pee. Instead of going one more stop down the hallway, which is lit up with sunlight and using the toilet.

A few life changes that have occured are we moved about 10 hours south to move in with my boyfriend. His father has been nonexistant for at least a year. My boyfriend has taken the role on as Dad for both my children. And my son has also started kindergarden, which he loves. He can't wait to goto school everyday.

I am at my wits end with this. I don't know what to do to stop this from happening. I don't want to regress and put him in nighttime pullups.

What can I do to help my son and stop this behavoir?

Hi there!

Welcome to the board!

It sounds like you may be right and  this change in his wetting behavior may be a result of all the changes that have taken place in his life recently.  Have you asked him why he's doing this? I know I've caught my 6 yr old doing this on occasion but with him it was mostly because he didn't want to stop what he was doing to visit the bathroom.

You mentioned that you have a night light in his room.  Is the walk to the bathroom illuminated as well?  Maybe he's afraid to walk to the bathroom in the dark?

I'd also suggest that you speak to his doctor about this issue to make sure there isn't a physical or emotional issue that is causing the issue.  I'd also like to share an article on iVillage with you about possible complications brought on by physical or emotional issues.  Hopefully there will be something in the article that will help. Good luck to you- please keep us posted.
