By cutoff, we are referring to how many days BEFORE O you DTD. For a girl, you want a cutoff of two to three days BEFORE ovulation. Girl sperm are heartier and can live longer than boy sperm, so you want some of those sperm setting up "there" waiting for the egg for a few days.
For a boy, you do not want a cutoff. You want to DTD on O day exactly, not before or after. So for both of my boys, we did not DTD for 4 days prior to O, then on O day, we DTD, using the boy position and technique given by Dr. Shettles. Some of the basic points of Dr. Shettles boy attempt are as follows, but I still recommend you read the book too....
1. For a boy, abstain from sex for at least 4 days prior to O. That preserves a higher sperm count, which favors boy sperm.
2. DTD exactly when you O. You want to be as close as possible to the time the egg drops, because boy sperm are faster and will make it to the egg before girl sperm.
3. DTD "doggy style" as deep penetration means the sperm is deposited closest to the cervix, and again this favors the faster boy sperm.
4. Have DH drink caffeine about 45 minutes before the attempt. Caffeine speeds up the body, including sperm, so this gives the boy sperm an even faster start. You need about 45 minutes before it shows up in the sperm. Caffeine for mom is NOT recommended.
5. You need to have an orgasm, preferably right before DH, this changes the acidity of your vag, and makes it more hospitable to boy sperm.
