Have we missed the boat on this?
This story is primarily about how letting your kids talk back a little bit can help to develop their minds, however, I found the race issue brought up in the study to be fascinating.
The study follows Mexican-American families and gives some insight into the delayed cognitive growth that many of the kids experience because of the way their parents interact with them. (Please let me be clear - I am not saying that the way they interact is wrong or should be changed in any way.) In my opinion, this shows why education may need to be approached differently for Mexican-American children (and any others whose culture is distinctly different from ours).
Is this something you see schools doing?
Can we teach students from different cultures in the same way that we teach Caucasian students, and expect them to flourish?
