My husband and I are not exactly living in penury, but there are days when one of the kids will holler out that he's out of underpants, and I tell him to go get a pair out of his brother's drawer. Heck, they share a toilet, which I am dead sure is not exactly super-hygenic all of the time, since they (at 11 and 15) have been given full responsibility for cleaning it, and I usually have to throw a fit on Saturday morning to make sure it's fully scrubbed down once a week. They pull toilet paper off the same roll. They're not squeamish about using the other one's towel if they "forgot" to hang their own up. Let's face it, I'm quite clear on the fact that they are exposed to each other's fecal germs on a semi-regular basis.

Yes, this probably happens in our house, too. I'd rather not think about it too much! Mine don't share underthings, but I know my daughter has used my son's towel whenever she forgot to put one out for herself.

And of course, we need to coexist with some bad bacteria in order to have a properly functioning immune system. It's just that I prefer to think of it as abstract bacteria rather than literal poo, KWIM?

i think handing down clothes is great for kids especially since they outgrow them so fast. HOWEVER I think undies are going a bit to far. The way I look at it is would I want my sisters hand me down undies. Um NO. So I think if your able to hand down clothes why not give the kids something of their own. Bring them shopping with you when you do so they fell important about the situtation let them pick their own brand new undies!!!

All I have to say is, EWWWWWW.  : )

Underwear is the one item I draw the line at for hand-me-downs.

When I read this question my first though was YUCK, of course not! However....

I am an only child but I did get hand me downs from a cousin when $$$ was tight in my family and I was younger, and would be excited to see what would be in the bag of "new to me" clothes. Though I admit other kids did make fun of my clothes when I was around 8-10 (especially for wearing "floods"), and I do think it gave me a bit of a complex (probably why I am such a clothes addict today!). But I never had hand me down underwear or swimsuits and think I would not have wanted it.

However, if the kids don't have a problems with it, especially if they are very young and it is from a sibling, I don't see anything wrong with it as long as they are washed in hot water, not frayed, and bleached, and unstained. Hand me downs save money and are better for the environment. We are such a throwaway society. And for big families...well I just don't know how people afford to have 5 or 6 kids. You gotta do what you gotta do I guess. However, psychologicaly, I don't think a parent should ever force a child to wear hand me down underwear if they have any issues with it/negative feelings about it. It's not worth giving a child a complex over, it's not that expensive to buy new socks and undies. But if they don't know the difference and don't care, why not?
