Has anyone seen the documentary "The Business of Being Born"? After seeing that, I really don't want to go to a hospital to give birth, but i have scheduled my first ob/gyn appt. I'm only a few weeks pregnant. Should I start looking for a midwife now or just continue seeing the ob/gyn until I'm further along??

Also, please check out my blog! I've been blogging for about 6 days now and only one comment so far :( Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I would look immediately. The more time you have the better decision you will be able to make. Besides no guarantee that you will like the first one you find.

I am going to a Birth Center---both directors are CNM (Certified Nurse Midwives).  They both have Master's Degrees in Nursing, worked for many years as RNs in hospital L&D wards, and then later went on to get their Midwife Certs.

The are qualified to write prescriptions and give meds, etc.

There are a lot of great midwives who do not have all the formal medical degrees and training, but mine happen to, and I am glad about that.

I was so glad that the birth center accepted my insurance, otherwise I would have to go to a hospital and an OB practice again.

I would immediately start looking to see if any midwives or birth centers accept your insurance.  Sometimes you have to call your insurance company to get names of midwives, but it's worth it.

I think every woman who is thinking about having a baby should watch BOBB.  If only to get both perspectives of childbirth in this country.

I am seriously thinking about trying a water birth this time.  :)

Good luck!
