I am sorry if this has been asked before...but I am new to the board!!! ;)

IF DH ends up re enlisting and he is able to transfer his GI Bill to me, I will be able to pursue a career!  The past 8 years since my Dh has been in the Army I have worked entry level jobs.  I dropped out of college to marry him (ahh, young love) and am excited with the possibilty of finally earning a degree.  So far, I have looked into nursing, dental hygenist, and paralegal.  I am curious what careers work well with the possibility of moving. (although we have YET to PCS after 8 years!)

Transferring is hard. I had a hard time deciding what I want to do because of the transferring. I have changed my major plenty of times. The list went something like this. Paralegal, Accounting, Business Admin, Accounting, Nursing, Health Science - Nursing Home Management, Nursing, Accounting & Finance & lastly & hopefully my last ever change - A Dual BA in Marketing & Graphic Design.

When I am finally done I will have 3 Associates & 2 Bachelors - then it is on to my masters. However, I think I might take a bit of time off before I do that!

I chose Marketing & Graphic Design because DH wants his own business. Graphic Design I can freelance & work from home. & Marketing - well I wanted a business backgrounded degree & Graphic Design didn't give me that. I still have 3 years to go, I should only have 2 but adding the second major added another year.

I think your best bet would be to find something you absolutely love to do or have a passion for. I adore Photoshop & crafty stuff - graphic design allows me to do that, but I will still have a business background for more 9-5 jobs.

I'm a nurse and so far it's worked out pretty well. I've moved twice now to be with my DH (the initial move to where he was and then we PCS's). I was able to get a job in both places pretty quickly (considering how things are these days). I actually had a job lined up before I moved the first time and then I waited to get a job here until we were settled.

As far as nuring goes, there are a lot of options between working in hospitals, doctors' offices, and nursing homes (just to name some). You do need a nursing license in each state, unless you end up moving from one state that is part of the nursing compact agreement to anothers, then you can work on your previous license. For example, my original nursing license is from Delaware. My first move was to Texas. Both Delaware and Texas are part of the nursing compact agreement, so I was able to work in Texas on my Delaware nursing license and I didn't have to get a new license. When we PCS'd to Kansas, in order to work anywhere other than on post, I had to get a Kansas nursing license because Kansas isn't part of the nursing compact agreement. If you were to work on post though, they will accept any state's nursing license.

did  you know you can get 6 grand in tuition assistance for FREEEE just by being a military spouse??

You just have to choose a 'portable career' ( one of many careers) that will follow you whereveryou PCS to.

go to www.armyonesource.com and  look for the spouse's tuition assistance. It may take some searching, but you just fill out a short application. They have to verify that you are on DEERS. That takes about 6 weeks because there is a back log. Then you get the tuition assistance. They pay it directly to the school you choose. Most schools are in the system, and if not, you can apply to have them added.

This way by the time you get the G.I. bill transfered, you can get a better degree! maybe get your associates with the 6 grand, and finish up with a bachelors with the g.i. bill!

Thanks ladies!  All the info has been very helpful.  I just need to commit.  I've started classes more times than I can count.  I've dropped out of college 3 times over the last 8 years.  It's hard when because I keep saying, 'oh, I'll skip next semester because DH is leaving'  or 'but finals will fall right into block leave'  If I keep this up, Dh will be retired and I still won't have a degree!
