There was an article in my local San Diego newspaper this morning about Halloween costumes for kids, mostly regarding girls in the "tweens" age group. Some moms were interviewed and said that many of the costumes in that size range were inappropriate, that they were just variations on the "french maid" costume for adult women. One mom said she vetoed "slutty pirate, slutty tin man, slutty devil, slutty bumblebee", and more. (I'm kind of curious about what a slutty bumblebee looks like, maybe I'll find out tonight!).

My kids have grown and flown so I don't have first hand knowledge of today's costume offerings. Is this what moms all over the U.S. were seeing this year, or is this more unique to SoCal?

I don't think it's unique to So Cal.....seems to be here as well :-(

It's not just the Halloween costumes though.  Take a look at the day-to-day clothes that are on the rack for tweens and teens.  Those are so often over the top, it's unreal.

A couple years ago I was in Macy's looking at the toddler clothes and I swear some of the "little girl" panties looked like something straight out of Victoria's Secret!

I hate that growing up too fast is encouraged like that.....

Did you find out about the slutty bumblebee?? I'm still stuck on the slutty tin man.... what the heck??

I agree that all the girls clothes seem overboard in sexiness these days. Why would you want to say anything via your backside?? It's so sad that they seem to sell so the mfgrs keep making them. :(

No, I didn't get to see any bumblebees this year, slutty or otherwise. I didn't see many "racy" costumes at all but my dh answered the door more than I did...he had also read the article so he was kind of watching for them too. He saw a girl in the devil costume that was pictured with the article but he said that it didn't look particularly risque on the girl at our door. BTW we passed out 140 pieces of candy before we ran out of treats at 8pm and turned off the porch light so we saw a LOT of costumes; but they tended to be younger kids. There were still a lot of kids out roaming, maybe we just missed the slutty costumes?! Or maybe the stores were trying to sell them but parents refused to buy them.

Supposedly the tin man had a short frilly skirt (like a french maid costume) that made it slutty looking. Just sounds weird to me.

I agree with you that girls' clothes in general are too sexy looking. I can remember shopping for my dd about 15 years ago trying to find party dresses and seeing what appeared to be miniature cocktail dresses; and arguing over what I termed "hooker fashions" 10 yrs ago when she was a young teen so its been an issue for a while. And I don't get the fad of having something written across the butt, either. Why not just put a sign that says "look at my butt" or maybe "your ad here"... although maybe if my butt still looked 23 I'd feel differently about it LOL.
