Hello - my niece is 3 years old and her mother recently took her to the dermatologist because her hair is rather thin, doesn't grow, and feels wirey.  Many family members have been telling her that she needs to have her hair looked at because it doesn't look "normal".  When she went to the Dr he told her that he hasn't seen anything like this in over 5 years and that she needs to see a specialist in Chicago.  We now have an apt to see a specialist but I am also very anxious to hear what the prognosis of this condition might be.  Her hair doesn't really fall out it just hasn't been growing.  I'm very concerned becasue I know hair is very important to a young girl and I know there are larger problems that other are experiencing but I very nervous about the upcoming appointment.  Have any parents/friends/relatives experienced this with a young child?  Any thoughts or anything that I might want to research before she heads to the specialist?

Thanks!!!

Hi  when does she see the specialist in Chicago?  I don't have a clue as to what it might be but was curious to see if your family has received any information yet.  Hugs ~

I've never heard of this, either, but am interested to hear what specialist will come back with. (HUGS) to your niece and keep us updated!

Ok - so now we have an idea with what is going on with her hair.  The dermalogist told us that her tests have concluded she has a condition called Pilli Annulatti.  Try and Google it and the findings are slim.  However, I have a question for everyone out there that might have ANY type of hair conditions.  Do you find that hair conditions are developed from an underlying cause like diet related?  I have a client that owns a successful hair salon and has been doing hair and skin treatments for 40 years.  I was talking with her about my niece's condition and she said she had never heard of it.  However, she did tell me that most alapecia clients she sees have adjusted their diet/stress level/lifestyle and have had success with recovery of alapecia.  I'm not saying this is a cure, just saying that maybe we should look in to an underlying cause rather than crossing our fingers and hoping it goes away, like the dermatologist told us to do.  What do you think?
