How long to run a temp?

My 5 yr old son started running a 103+ temp Sun evening. He never really had anything but a little cough and a runny nose but continued to run the temp till I took him to the Dr on Tues. He tested postive for Type A flu and was I told just to treat the symptoms like I was doing.

Well here it is Friday and he is still running a bit of a temp 100+. I know that isn't much but after almost 6 days it is getting frustrating! He will feel good for a while, then he just lays around. One time I found him in the bed asleep by himself and he never does that without me telling him to! The Dr said he would run one for 4-5 days. I dont want to treat the temp at around 100 but my husband does since he seems like he feels so bad. I just dont know what to do? Any ideas would be wonderful.

Sorry he has been sick for so many days. Is he coughing a lot? Any sign that there is a secondary infection brewing? My first instinct would be to say that he just is taking longer to get over the flu. :( but if he looks worse or is still carrying fever on Mon. or just still seems to feel bad I would take him back in for a second look. One of my friends daughters had the flu and has carried a fever off and on for 2 weeks--they finally put her on antibiotics b/c she could not shake the cough. I am with your husband if he is feeling bad use the motrin or tylenol to bring him some relief--judge the child not the number.

Hope this helps a little I know I hate it when my peeps are sick!

Hi - how is he feeling today?  Better, I hope.  I tend to ignore temperatures under 101.  If you try to connect fevers with a serious bacterial complication of some sort, the temps are invariably over 101.  Anytime a child runs a temp greater than 101 for more than 3 or 4 days in a row, that needs to be rechecked by their doctor.  Hope he's feeling better!
