How to Make the Transition From Diapers to Training Pants
Fear of the unknown is common with toddlers, especially since much of what they experience is new to them. Ease your child into new events like toilet training and wearing underwear by talking to them about the events before they happen.
Step 1
Wait until your child has used the toilet successfully. Don't try to put underwear or training pants on your toddler until they have had some potty success either urinating or having bowel movements.
Step 2
Talk about underwear. Chances are when you get dressed you have a young child scrutinizing every piece of clothing you put on. Grab the teachable moment and tell your child about underwear. Point out the people in your house and their underwear. Lay all of the different undies on the floor and compare them. Add your toddler's undies to the display and talk about how your toddler will someday wear them.
Step 3
Bring the undies with you to each diaper change. Talk about them and when you think the time is right put them on. If your toddler doesn't like them, which is very likely, take them off and tell your child you will try again later. Praise them for trying.
Step 4
Buy training pants or underwear with your child's favorite character on them. This is a great way to get them on your child - getting them off will be another issue!
Step 5
Have plenty on hand. If your toddler expresses a desire for one pair or design, buy a lot of that kind. The less stress your toddler feels in the beginning, the easier the transition will be.
