Got a text from DD today that said "I saw a colon resection today. It was cool. It took about 4 hours." To me, that would be totally gross, but that's why I'm not in nursing. The blood & guts stuff doesn't bother her, although she said she had to step out cause she was having trouble breathing w/ the mask on. Since we're both big Grey's Anatomy fans, I could just see what it would be like. It's strange to picture your kids doing these really adult things.

How exciting.  I suspect now that I will think of your dd when I watch Grey's Anatomy!!!  I couldn't watch either.  It's lucky for the rest of us there are people like your dd who can stomach it!

Cool for your DD!  I couldn't do it, but I'm glad there are people out here who can, and who find it facinating.  N hasn't gotten that far in her nursing program yet (still struggling with A & P here!), but I suspect she will have a similar attitude to your DD's.  She's a nursing assistant in a nursing home, and she finds things like non-healing surgical wounds that have to be packed and re-dressed totally facinating! Ugh! Not me... we might be in the same business, but I'd much rather deal with my job than hers!

Hi Liz,

Amazing to hear the text!

What a treat to be so connected to learn about mask malfunctions!

I couldn't make it through the med school tour of the anatomy lab with my boy, all they did was open the door. I can't imagine being in a surgical theater.

Do you know how they decide what procedures they learn/follow?

Is she paired up with an experienced nurse?

This semester she is in a very small hospital. Her group has 3 other students. It's more of a general orientation I think, learning how to do basic things like take blood pressure, give injections. Then they will be sent to specialize in diff. areas like psych, maternal/child, med/surg and pediatrics.
