Here's an interesting article on studies being done about probiotics in infant formula:

This is the first I have heard of this.

My kids are older and were both bf and ff.  I'm sure the formula 7-10 years ago did not have any of these probiotics in it.  I think that allergies are usually hereditary.  I have them, my dh does not. My older son has them and the younger ds does not. IMO the food choice you make for your child does not pre determine them to have allergies or not.

hello!! ita. this is one time i will say genetics are more to blame than food choices. some people can go through life and wake up one morning allergic to something they werent allergic to before...i was formula fed and im pretty sure 29 years ago-they didnt have all that fancy stuff in formula-and i have no allergies. my sister does-she has a fish allergy-and my mom has a slight peanut one. my oldest child has no allergies and my youngest has a small one to 100% organic cranberry juice(no problem with the cocktails-just the 100% pure one!). both were formula fed-with the same formula.(my youngest couldnt stomach the ones with dha and ara in them)so i dont think theres much truth in that. but hey-if its in there and there are some health benefits-bonus!!

Actually, not all allergies are hereditary. In fact, severe food allergies in families with no history of allergy are on the rise, and they don't really know why. My 12 yo DS has a life-threatening peanut allergy, but neither DH nor I has a food allergy.

I would be very interested to see if probiotics can help. You can buy them in yogurt for older kids and adults, but DS hates the taste.

My ds has a life threatening allergy to all food coloring.  He was both bf and ff.  We began using pro biotics over a year ago to help with the allergy and it has worked amazingly. We have used pro biotics for years with our family.  Including treating colic. My 4th baby had colic and I found research showing that babies given gas drops only had improvement something like 12% of the time, whereas those treated with pro biotics had improvement something like 90% of the time.  We started giving it to him and he almost immediately stopped crying, every single time.  It makes sense though, if your body can properly digest the food the way it is suppose to the it alleviates the gas pain.  Needless to say I am a HUGE advocate for pro biotics.
