I just watched the Joy Behar show and they were debating whether spanking is effective and helpful when raising children.  What do you all think?

I think whether spanking is "effective" or not is beside the point. Abuse in any form may be "effective", but that doesn't make it a good idea. There are just too many other good parenting methods out there that don't involve physically hurting a child for spanking to EVER be a good option. I'm a "reformed spanker" myself, my youngest 3 kids have never been spanked, and never will be, and they are MUCH better behaved than their older siblings who were spanked ever were.

When you know better, you do better.

Speaking as someone who was spanked, it's absolutely useless as a tool for raising children. The only thing being spanked ever taught me was to not get caught or pin everything on someone else.

What really astounds me is when someone punishes a child for violent behavior like biting or hitting another kid with spanking. They hit someone so you hit them to teach them not to do it? Some real logic going on there.

I started out as a spanking mom 25 yrs ago because that was what I knew, and what DH knew.  After a few years of that going nowhere, we started using other parenting methods, and within a few months our DS was much better behaved than he was during the spanking days.  IMO, spanking is pretty much useless as a way of teaching a child anything - it might work to *control* a child, but it doesn't *teach* them much more than not to get caught.
