I Need A Baby Sitter

Anyone have any ideas on how to find a reputable sitter?

We have just moved to a new area, and do not know anyone.  But DH has already informed me of at least 2 different engagements we need to attend with in the month (for his work).

I checked out Sittercity and care4hire.  Both want like $40 up front just to see their listings.  I looked in the phone book to see what might be available, with no luck.

I am about to just start calling Daycare centers and asking if they have anyone interested in babysitting every so often.

We were really lucky where we lived last, as DH had a coworker who hooked us up with a great babysitter.

Any suggestions?

Maybe call some local elementary schools and ask if there is a Parents Club. Get the number of the people at the parents club and ask them.

Are you members at a church or other place of worship? Ask the youth director and/or children's minisrty director if they have any suggestions of high schoolers or college age kids. My dd#1 gets most of her babysitting jobs this way.

Depending on how urban an area that you're living in, try calling the guidance counselor at the local high school.  They sometimes know of older teens who do babysitting, and tend to know if the kids are responsible "good" kids or not.  I got my best babysitter that way when my kids were small, but we also live in a small town where everyone knows everyone else.  In a larger community, the guidance counselor might not know the kids as well.

In addition to everyone else's excellent suggestions: are your kids in preschool or elementary school yet? If so, ask the director or one of the other moms who she uses. When we first moved to this area and our kids were little, we were surprised to find that some of the elementary teachers did babysitting on the side. One in particular would do overnights for parents who were going away for the weekend.

Between the high school, a local house of worship, the elementary school, and neighborhood moms, you should be able to find someone without having to pay a service that you really know nothing about. Let that be your last resort.

If you lived in the Boston area, I'd send you my daughter, but your profile says you're in the southeast!
