discussion title:
Teachers and Facebook photos
The other discussion reminded me of a situation my friend ran into last year.
There's a teacher (Ms. D) at the high school one son attends, and the other son had just graduated from. Ms. D is pretty and a popular grade 12 teacher. She's 24 and it is her second year teaching. She has a rule that she will not add any students on Facebook until they have graduated.
My friend's son had just graduated and added her on Facebook. Her profile includes pictures of her drinking and going to clubs/bars, but she does not appear excessive, drunk or inappropriate (in action or dress) in any of the photos, nor do her friends. She also appears to be of age in all the photos (drinking age is 19 here). My friends still thought it was horribly inappropriate for a teacher to have photos consuming any alcohol or going out, thought it set a bad example and wanted to complain to the principal because her younger son still attends.
I was of the opinion that 1) anyone viewing is a former student, and now an adult- most with less than a year before they can legally drink anyway and 2) drinking, going to bars and clubs is pretty normal for young adults, and I don't see going to them as setting a bad example. My daughter is applying to medical schools and I know she responsibly engages in these activities, so I'm not sure how they make someone such a bad person or example.
WWYD? Do you think it's inappropriate for a teacher to have such photos, even though there's no current students viewing them?
