" What is your favorite part about living rurally?

What is your least favorite part about living rurally? "

-------------------------

It would be hard to come up with many negatives for rural living. A problem for some is having a good water supply both in quality and quantity. Increased distances to schools, medical facilities and shopping locations can become an added negative especially in bad weather such as drifting snow.

But those who enjoy privacy, space, animals and growing things the positives outnumber the negatives considerable. I personally enjoy people on a one to one contact but grouped together in a large crowd is not something I desire as a 24/7 life style. With public utilities available most city property is expensive so homes are built on small lots putting neighbors close together. There is more truth then poetry to the old adage, "you can't cuss your cat without the neighbor knowing."  Once a person has had the opportunity to enjoy the freedom and space available in country living the city properties look even smaller and more crowded.

With the millions of acres of unused space in America I think it silly to build sky scrapers and high rise apartments and condos. I would never build or purchase a home with more then two levels and the second one would need to be a walk out lower level.  Many homes are being built with three and four levels which require a lot of space for stairs and also hard to control an even temperature throughout. Not very nice as one ages either.

Just a pet peeve.

Dick

Favourite part:

- I can't see or hear my neighbours (and they can't see or hear me ...)

- the kids can play in the mud and take their clothes off outside to get cleaned up and not drag the mud into the house

- the garden is getting bigger and bigger

- I can't see the cars when they go by on the road

- I don't care if the neighbour cuts their grass - I don't have to do it, cause they can't see it ...

Least favourite part:

- I have to drive the kids to all their play dates

- Contractors/Plumbers/Electricians don't want to come out to do "little" things, so we end up doing them ourselves

What is your favorite part about living rurally?

S P A C E!! Having my own animals for my own food that does nto contain antibiotics or hormones (chickens and pigs right now, but I am trying to talk DH into a dairy cow!) A large garden. I can leave the doors of my house unlocked. Listening to the animal sounds.

What is your least favorite part about living rurally?

I miss having lots of restaurant choices. The long drives in the winter. Also the local grocery prices are high as compared to the areas with more competition.
