glenn close gives me the creeps, since her villan appearance in fatal attraction.  LOL.

i don't know.

i think the confidence in that video appearance was good.  what about the real ppl behind those labels?  i think, schizophrenia.  bipolar.  depression will always have black clouds over them.  and IMO,the illnesses are not like a cancer illness.

not to hijack this thread, but i think over the years the way public schools, professionals and parents have helped eliminate the stigma of special ed is to stop referring it as a place for retards or less kind words.  today it's more and more about integrating not separating those kids.  accomodations inside the classroom.  learning differences not disability.  and like never before,it's a beautiful thing that kids with real handicaps like CP and others are included in classes like PE,like center time with the mainstream, regular kids.  i'm thankful my kids see that.  a friend of my DS is autistic and that difference doesn't get in the way of their friendship.

actor, morgan freeman said once to eliminate discrimination/prejudice you stop talking about it.  the same could apply here.

I like Morgan Freeman as an actor, but as a social scientist, not so much.

Silence in the face of discrimination only offers power of suppression to the discriminators, e.g. Jim Crow, DADT, women as 2nd class citizens, handicapped rights. I'm loud, proud, an unapologetic in speaking about a number things that most people would prefer to keep silent. Silence doesn't bring change, it keeps the untenable status quo.

The proper designation would be "a student with mental retardation."  Obviously that is not nearly all what special education about, only a small amount of students have that classification.

But if you are saying it is better to never mention to anyone that the student has mental retardation or autism or a learning disability etc would be a disservice to the student.  For one the parents have the right to know what their child's classification is  and how the school is planning on educating them.  Also other school personnell in the school would need to know this information so as to better teach them.

But yes it is bad to call anyone a retard.

PS I have not watched the video, what does this have to do with mental illness?
