Get Pet Stains out of carpet?

this is an old thread, but thought I'd add what works for me. We currently have 9 cats (please, spay and neuter!) I am cat sitting for a friend who's female was very pregant when she got here. Anyway, her cats aren't happy here, my cats are happy they are here and the kittens, well, they go where they are if the litter box isn't handy.
So, my floors are nasty. I did a bit of research. I tried baking soda and vinager right on my carpet, that was entertaining. Then I steam cleaned that area to get the vinager out. I borrowed a black light (urine glows green/yellow under a black light) and found that I got some of the stain, but not all. More research led me to peroxide. I thought they must be kidding but my house smells nasty. I turned off all the lights and with the black light in one hand and a big bottle of peroxide in the other, I drenched all the glowing spots I found. Once it was dry, I checked again and not only are they not glowing any more, I can't smell even a hint of urine, and we know how nasty cat pee is!
For the record, one of the cats peed on my dd's bed. I used a product called Odor Mute on that. I figured I had nothing to lose if I saturated the mattress, since it was ruined otherwise anyway. I mixed up a quart of it. Then I used the steam cleaner to suck as much pee out as I could, then poured this Odor Mute on it, sucked it out, poured, sucked, again and again, until neither my dd nor I could smell it. Once the mattress was dry, I couldn't see where the stain had been. I didn't get a chance to nose or black light test it before she made the bed, but it must be ok since she's not complaining...
Just wanted to share a real plan that works. The peroxide does change the chemical composition of the urine, honestly neutralizing it. It works better than any expensive product I tried.
