hi ladies

i'm not sure what the vaccine situation is in the US but the H1N1 vaccine is now available in canada and clinics have opened today to begin giving the shot to those on the priority list. i can't get an appt to see my pedi until nov 3 as i have many questions about it so i was just wondering what your thoughts are re: if you're planning on giving your LO the vaccine and/or the flu shot.

i'm on the fence b/c they developed this vaccine so fast. i'm sure they did some testing but i don't know if they had enough time to put the vaccine thru rigorous testing as they would have if they had more time to develop it... and i've also heard mixed messages about taking the vaccine and the flu shot... what are your thoughts?

My understanding is they actually did more testing on this one than they do for the regular flu shot. I also can't get in to see my Dr until next Tuesday, and would have liked to discuss it with her more.

At the end of the day, I am more afraid of the virus than the shot. That said, I am 11 weeks pregnant and it is recommended I wait until next week when the shipment without the 'adjuvent' arrives. (I'm in Canada too) Besides, I have a cold now and Lucas is getting over a double ear infection, so is on antibiotics. I'm not sure how that affects the shot, but I'm thinking he'll have to wait anyway. Lucas puts everything in his mouth right now, so if he is exposed at all, he will catch it!

I do always get a regular flu shot, and did when I was pregnant with Lucas. So I guess I am 'pro' vaccinations. I want my hubby to get his shot right away to reduce the risk of him bringing something home from work. And yet, just yesterday I found out my co-workers 10 year old son has confirmed H1N1. So I guess I should be more worried about my office!

I am a pro-vaccination, but I will not be giving my daughter the H1N1 (I am giving the regular flu though). My pediatrician told me that they have only tested it in 150 kids. He just said that it is probably ok, but since that the swine flu has been so mild and it is so early in the season, that he would not recommend it (and I have a very laid back ped). He did recommend the regular flu vaccine though because the time peaks in December and if they get it now and then have to get another shot (The first flu vaccine you have to get 2) then they will be immunized by then. This is just what I have heard. HTH!

I was against it at first because of its newness also.  Then I read that every part of the shot is exactly the same as the seasonal flu shot, except the virus strain itself.  And alot of people are against it since it hasn't been tested much; but doctors are going on the premise that since everything is identical except the actual flu strain it should as safe as any seasonal flu shot.  Now I do plan on getting it for my LO---only if I can get a mercury free option though.

We ultimately did get both the H1N1 and regular flu vaccines for our little ones (ages 3 and 1).  It was a very hard decision, but because it is made the same way as the regular flu vaccine, and more importantly, because children have died from the flu but not the shot, I made the choice to vaccinate them.
