Spitting on the ground is a violation so serious it warrants a spanking?

WHY does a child HAVE to be "punished"?

What does a spanking actually TEACH the child?

In the spittin incident, does it teach the child why they shouldn't spit? Or how one should spit if needed?

What does grounding a child teach? (I personally disagreee 100% w/groundings...it punishes no one but the adult enforcing it).

We "helped" our friend "punish" her son.  He kept using money Mom didn't have.  She spanked, it didn't stop.

She grounded but it still didn't stop.

Then the child had to EARN the funds back, which is where we came in.

He had to pick up 1lb of doggie do for every $1 he used.

He then understood the concept better and never did it again.

How does spankings teach ANYTHING?

***AND WE LOVE OUR CHILDREN AFTER THEY GET A SPANKING SO THEY WILL NOT AND SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY FEAR OF YOU AFTER YOU SPANK THEM IF U TALK TO THEM AND EXPLAIN IT TO THEM WHY THEY GOT IN TROUBLE OR A SPANKING.****

This always creeps me out. Because this is what adult domestic abusers do after they assault their partner. They tell their partner they love them, and explain to them why they had to abuse them.

ITA!

I have always tried to respect the pro-spankers point of view.

but I've yet, in the 8 yrs I've been posting, to see ONE poster logically explain how a spanking teaches the offender anything.

In spitting, as her example, does it teach the child WHY one doesn't spit?

Does it teach the child the proper manner and place in which to spit?  Because sometimes, you DO have to spit.

What does an actual spanking teach?

A good example is myself...I have ulcerative colitis, which can result (at times) in farts.  And sometimes even accidents.

Sometimes I literally can NOT stop a fart...sometimes I can.

Should I be punished?

When I had braces I spit a lot...my mouth made more spit.  It was gross.

But in both situations, I learned how to do what my body needed politely.

Without being spanked.

Kathleen

Hey, just throwing my two cents in.

IF a child is playiu ng with a light socket, IF a parent spanks the child and says, "Don't touch", and IF that child does NOT touch the light socket again....the child made the association that the light socket is off limits......how can you say that the child DIDN'T learn to not touch the light socket????

The rightness or wrongness of the spanking is moot to the point of your statement.  BETTER methods are a moot point...you mentioned a "logical" explanation.

That's a logical explanation.
