Folks, two of my professors so far have said that I have the perfect background, even gift, for special ed.  I know up here in Ontario, once I finish a teaching degree, I must then take an Alternative Qualification course; doesn't take long.  But, circumstances make me think that I might want to teach in the U.S. instead.  Could someone tell me what I'd have to do to get certified?  My BA is in musicology, my MM is in conducting, and I'm close to an M.Ed. in Secondary Ed.

Thanks in advance, and I'm sorry if any of my posts have offended in the past.  I think they could have, because people often don't respond to them.

I recently looked into a Masters in Special Education myself. I plan on getting my Masters from the same university where I received my Bachelors and their SPED certification program is very rigorous. It probably depends on what university you'll be attending to get your degree; there are several people in my family who are SPED teachers or have their SPED certification and I know they've talked about how much work it involved but I don't think any of them regret it.

It depends on the individual state you would like to teach in - each has different requirements. I came into SPED with a degree in counseling and I had to take 11 classes to become certified, another 5 if I want to pursue a Master's degree.

If you find you are interested I'd suggest sending your credentials to the state department of education for evaluation....they can tell you what requirements you will have to fill (as in classes), any state tests you have to take, the steps to get licensed once you have everything in order as well as suggestions as to what colleges / universities may offer what you need.

SPED is very stressful but also very rewarding. I always tell those interested in SPED to be prepared that only a portion of your work involves actual teaching & prep- you will probably spend double the time with case management, paperwork, and meetings!

I think the others have offered good advice. Check with the university and the state department of education to see what is required for licensing and what the university offers to meet those requirements. There are several different areas in special ed. Be sure to check what areas the university offers. Many do not offer courses that lead to certification in all areas of special education.

I went straight into teaching SPED with my Bachelor's degree so can't offer you any pointers.  I can tell you the process will be different for you than it was for me.
