My students are having a big discussion about feedback, questions and concerns from parents. I tell them not to give out personal info such as home phone, cell phone and personal e-mail. I believe contacts should be through school channels to protect privacy and give a teacher some time for family. I don't believe in unlisted phone numbers but I don't think you encourage them to call you at home whenever they want. I believe a good classroom website, a handbook and prompt replies to notes, school e-mail and calls during ghe school day can answer a lot of questions. I firmly believe a conference appointment is the best approach for most concerns.

Of course my classes are inexperienced and most are tech natives who Facebook, Twitter and text constantly, but they believe that it's important to communicate with parents, and in some cases students, in about any way and any time. Some say they will have a classroom blog or wiki for parents. Some feel there is nothing wrong with texting with parents or students with homework questions. Some say they would befriend parents and students on Facebook or MySpace. I think this coud get scary if not handled carefully and they lack the experience to jump into a lot of this without some problems. The school could also have a policy against certain forms of communication.

How do you communicate with parents? What are the rules and limits? What about homework questions and forgotten materials?

Sherry

I absolutely do NOT give out my home number for any reason. I had a homebound girl ask for it in case she had questions, but I gave her my school email and school phone number, and told her to contact me that way. I love using email to contact parents, but if they call me, I always return the call ASAP from school. I never call them with my cell because of caller ID. We also have unlisted number. My home life is just that.

I work at a private school, and my son is a student there. We publish a school directory that is given out to parents. I have my home number listed in there for my son. Nobody I would consider a friend calls my home number. Ever. So, if the home number rings, it is usually a solicitation, and once or twice, it has been a parent in the 7 years I've worked at this school. I just don't answer that phone. Period. They can leave a message.

I have given my parents my home email (well, one of the 5 emails I use!) because sometimes I am unable to access my school email from home. In case of an emergency, I want them to be able to get through to me. I don't think I've gotten a single email at my home email that was not necessary.

As far as Facebook, etc. I do NOT 'friend' parents on FB. That is where I draw the line.

We have this discussion at school a lot - especially about Facebook. Teaching in the high school most all our students are on FB...so are the teachers. Often we get "friend" requests from the students as well as from former students that have now graduated. Every teacher I know has a different line....some do not "friend" any student, former student or parents. Some teachers will "friend" former students but not current ones, some will "friend" parents of students - others not. For me, I don't "friend" any student or parent...not so much for what is on my FB page but I worry about what some of my co-workers put for their "status" which shows up on my page or sometimes comments they make to me on my page - complicated!! Especially in a very small community like mine word travels fast and I try to stay far away from the drama...I don't need something silly like FB getting any rumors started.

As far as other types of contact....I don't give out my phone number but it is listed and in the last 4 years only 1 parent has called. I've also called parents from my cell phone and none have ever called me back on that number. So far everyone has been really good about calling me at school or contacting me through my school email. If a parent sends a note with a question I always call back that day.

Good discussion!

Judy
