Teachers' Circle

I haven't been in HS for a while, but when I was student council sponsor we did the dress-up days, hall decorations, class banners and daily contests. We had a cook-out and community pep rally on Thursday night before the game and an in-school pep rally last period on Friday. We weren't allowed to do anything like decorating during school hours. We didn't do a parade. The king and queen were crowned before the game.

We are in homecoming week now, too. We have had the dress-up days this week and I'll say that I didn't see anyone go too far from dress code.

Tonight at 7pm is a bonfire w/ other activities like a dunking booth, etc.

Tomorrow is shortened blocks (by 10 minutes each) and a pep rally the last 30 minutes of school, a parade after school, faculty & staff tailgate dinner after the parade, football game at 7pm and dance at 9pm.

A full week but all the decorating of halls and for the parade is done after school.

It is a fun time (for the most part) but I'm kind of ready for it to be over now :)

Way late jumping in on this but I co-sponsor student council and we are largely in charge of all homecoming festivities. We work with our Pep Club to theme the days of homecoming week. The only school rules students are allowed to break for the sake of that week (and occasional "fun" days) are wearing hats and sunglasses and having wildly colored hair. The hair dye must wash out but our administration has no problem with students doing it if they are participating and that has been something we've striven to get among our student body for years. Prime example: the Tuesday of homecoming week was Pink Day. Students wore pink outfits and accessories in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. They dressed up to win prizes and contribute money to donate to a breast cancer research foundation. They did all this in memory of a former teacher and coach who lost her battle wit the disease last winter. Students who balked at spirit week in past years now participate with glee. We now even have faculty and staff who actually participate and show their support and spirit along with the student body.

I have no trouble with students "violating" rules for that week because they know it's something special; the administration agrees and the community in sum total supports it, too. Since we started allowing these minor bends during homecoming week, we've had our spirit week participation grow three-fold and it's brought back unity and spirit among the student body.

We have assemblies every day (5), with a shortened schedule (45 min. vs. 60) and activites/competitions at each assembly.  Every year has a theme, then daily dress-up themes follow. 

Thursday is the Powerpuff football game (junior vs. senior girls), followed by a bonfire.

Friday is the parade (all classes and a few clubs make floats), then staff bbq, then game.  Floats take a lap around the field, winners (king, queen and class spirit) are announced at half-time.

Formal dance (but not huge dresses or tuxs, though) is on Sat.
