Our football team made it to the playoffs this year! That is great! I know they worked hard and I hope they do well tonight. However, in honor of this achievement, they were EXCUSED from school all day (cheerleaders too). They hung out at the field house, had lunch at the local steak house, and watched the new G.I. Joe movie. They came back in time for the pep rally. The coaches' reasoning was that they didn't want the players distracted today.

But I just don't get it. The band kids weren't excused today. They work just as hard. What about the straight-A students? How come they never get a day off? Or the students who are never absent? I think it's important for kids to be well-rounded, but by giving them the day off, aren't we telling them that academics are less important? Do I feel this way because I was a nerd in HS and am still uncoordinated and clumsy? And what about the fact that we are on the list of target school to be "fresh started" if our graduation rates don't improve? I have 3 or 4 football players that really could've used the class time today to ensure they graduate this year.

Oh well, I guess I don't really need a reply. I just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening.

Double wow! I've been in some schools with great teams and nutty administrators, but the worst I've seen would never have approved something like this. He would have been scared to death to get all the band parents or honor society parents asking for the same thing. He hated to make tough decisions and he hated to set precedents.

In our state, teams who make the state finals get a day to travel to the facility to practice on site. That usually means dinner out and mp3 players on the bus because it's a 3 hour trip one way. No cheerleaders are included.

In the past I've known schools that dismissed kids for the day after winning a state championship. They usually had a pep session to honor the team and dismissed early. Now that is not possible due to laws governing time on task and days of attendance.

Well, they won the first round of playoffs so of course, they are excused this Friday all day again. This will continue until they lose. So what if they win the state championships? Do they get automatic graduation with straight-A averages? ;P

It sounds like the coach and principal have a close relationship! My former principal was buddy-buddy with the head football coach. He covered for him and let him get away with murder compared to everyone else. In the media center I was supposed to babysit all his classes so he could do coaching stuff instead of teaching.

A day off is ridiculous. And we wonder why college and professional athletes have a sense of entitlement and think they are better than everyone else?  Looks like that starts early in some places.  The next time you give a quiz over something really challenging like "What's you name?"  maybe you can request a day off because everyone got a perfect score on the quiz! LOL
