Ovulation/Progesterone ?

I am very new to charting. CD1 was Oct. 5. My doctor scheduled Day 3 labs on Oct. 7 and Day 21 (Progesterone) on Oct. 25. My progesterone level was 9.08. I was expecting AF Nov. 2 which would have been a 28 day cycle. Well, I got AF on Oct. 31. I'm wondering if a short cycle meant that I ovulated earlier than I thought and that's why my progesterone level was lower than 10.  I didn't use a OPK or chart my temp so we were simply going off a typical 28 Day cycle, ovulating on CD 14. I'm 44 and my doc wasn't hopeful about the 9.08 level but when I talked to a few women, they said I may have ovulated earlier than CD 14 (explaning a lower progesterone level on Day 21). Then, getting AF a few days earlier than expected gave me a little hope that it actually was higher a few days before Day 21. Does any of this make sense or am I just grasping? I see an RE tomorrow so I'm sure we'll know more soon enough. I'm, obviously, hoping the news is hopeful. Thanks, Jen

Hi and welcome Jen.  Do you plan to start temping and/or using OPKs?  That can be helpful, especially if you've been having difficulty conceiving (which I'm assuming could be the case since you'll be seeing an RE).  Cd21 could have definitely been the wrong day for the progesterone test, since it needs to be done 7dpo.  If you don't ovulate on cd14 (and most women don't!) then the test may have been on the wrong day.

I hope things will go well with the RE appointment.  Keep us posted.

Thanks, Susan, for the thoughtful response. Briefly, I am 44 yo and my partner is 39 yo. I have three grown children. He has none. We are planning a tubal reversal in Feb. 2010. I thought it might be practical to see where I stand hormonally so we would have a better understanding of our chances of conceiving post-TR. All my hormone levels were "within normal limits" but my progesterone, as I said, in the earlier post, was a little low. So, my ObGyn sent me to an RE who I saw today. It was interesting. He basically said the labs, although very positive, were useless as my age would be the deciding factor. After 40, he said, the quality of one's eggs decreases significantly and therefore the ability to conceive drops dramatically. However, he didn't advise us NOT to go through with the TR and actually said if we did decide to go forward that he recommends starting with ovulation induction coupled with IUI immediately. My partner and I are committed to giving this a shot and, hopefully, we will be part of that small percentage of couples over 40 who do conceive and have a baby. Will be checking in and wish everyone the best of luck on this journey. Jen

I hope the TR will work for you.  I have a friend in her mid-30s who conceived immediately after her TR earlier this year.  But, like you say, age is a big factor.  Hopefully, with knowledge of your cycles thru charting, you'll have a better than average chance.

If you're not doing so already, you might try taking 100mg vitamin B6 daily and see if you see an improvement in your luteal phase.  Sometimes B6 is helpful in boosting progesterone and improving the LP.  It can't hurt to give it a try, anyway.
