My 17 year old daughter has reached an all time low in negativity! Don't think I've been around someone so set on being pissed off at the world except maybe my son when he was her age.

Try to cheer her up, try to sympathize, empathize and everything I say or do I'm greeted with an even worse attitude than I started with.

I'm convinced this is a necessary innate trait that occurs when your child is about to leave the nest. Your to the point where your thinking "Don't let that door hit you in the @ss on the way out!"

That said my daughter has enlisted in the National Guard. She will graduate this summer, early!! Leaves for basic in October. I think when she is finished with basic and AIT she wants to go active duty which means Afghanistan! UUugh!

So this is a really big @ss door that's going to be hitting her in the @ss. lol

Very hard to grin and bear it but what else can I do??

Gretchen...{{{Hugs}}}

So, how are you REALLY with the idea of your child leaving for basic training?  I know that you get more than angry and frustrated but when you really think about it, are you really ready for her to go?  *sigh*

I'm so sorry that her attitude is for crap.  That really stinks!  And I have no help for you...

I've definitely got my issues with Ryder but negativity is not one of them.  I do wish that I could teach my son some sense of work ethic.  He has never learned what its like to work hard ALL day!  Its driving me insane...  I wish that I had a friend who owned a construction firm or something so that I could set up Ryder to work for PENNIES cleaning up trash...then he'd learn what work felt like.  He doesn't have time for a job so DH and I are struggling to teach him some form of work ethic...let's hope it takes before we both strangle him!

Well I'm more and more okay with her going off to basic. All she talks about is wanting to get out of Wyoming.

And like Ryder she has no sense of work ethic either. For similar reasons busy with school, ROTC, and other ways that aren't bad ways to spend her time. Good student, graduating early ect. Can't get her to lift a finger around the house.

So I will be feeling for her when she has her rude awakening because it will be tough, however, even though I won't let it show I'll have a little self satisfied "I told you so" moment.

What I'm more concerned about is her going active duty after her basic and AIT training are over. She is in the college first program so she only can go active voluntarily. They can't force her to go. However, she keeps talking about it. *sigh* This scares me.

<<<This scares me. >>>

Dear Lord...I'm sure that it does!  I can't imagine the emotions a parent goes through when their child goes active in the military!

Wow...I didn't know that the military offered a "college first" program.  Will her active duty remain voluntary even after college?

I hope that she excels and grows as she moves into this part of her life.  I will definitely be thinking of her (and you)...

Its so hard to believe that our babies are old enough to make such life-altering decisions!

I don't know what the deal will be with the college first program for sure. Is it for her entire career? Just this enlistment at what point does she forfeit the option?? I think as long as she is enrolled and meeting the GPA requirements she can't be called up at least for this first enlistment.

She talks about wanting to go to Italy which I'm not sure how realistic that is but sure beats Afghanistan and I can live with that!

However, I've told her I'll support her whatever she does. I mean I say I'm concerned play a little bit of the devils advocate but in the end once she's made her choice I'm behind her 100%
