Youngest DS's wife and kids are going to be here at the end of July for 10 days.  YAAAAAA    I need to get sunblock that is suitable for kids - which do you prefer?  There are so many to choose from - spray on - lotions - creams - dry lotion - which is best, what do I need to look for to keep the kids protected (other than a beach umbrella for them to play under which we already have).  DIL just said sun block - she has no preferences.

I use Coppertone Kids factor 30 for Rhi, there are several different versions of that and I look for the ones that are waterproof for up to 6 hours as Rhi is such a water baby.

The other thing that I used when Rhi was younger was a sun protecting swimsuit, it looked sort of like a divers wet suit with elbow length sleeves and knee length legs. It was comfy and pretty and really helped to keep the sunburns at bay. I know Curly had the same kind of suits for her girls - we ordered them from the same web site LOL!

How fun to have your grandbaby for a summer visit ;)

Oh, how exciting!!  My experience has been that the sprays may be easier to use on kids, but they are not effective - it's too easy to miss bits of kid.  The main thing is to remember to keep reapplying it, because it wears off pretty fast.  The number (SPF 30, e.g.) is supposed to be the number of minutes of protection it will give, but I'm not sure how accurate they are...and of course you have to reapply it after they're in the water, etc.  We liked the Banana Boat lotions.  We had to use unscented ones because our kids had fairly sensitive skins (plus I always hated the smells, LOL).

I love the spray...but make sure it's continuous spray. Banana Boat has an SPF 80 spray that is water/sweat proof.  But it is important to re-apply throughout the day.

I find that if I spray it on and then do a once over to rub it in it's really quick and easy and provides good coverage.  You may want to get a separate lotion one for the face though...or I just spray some in my hand and apply it to our faces.

Also, just FYI on sunscreen...you can still get color through it...it's meant to block out the harmful rays that cause skin damage.    So if the kids are bronzing it doesn't mean the sunscreen isn't working.  But if they still burn...that's another story!

Oh...and I've heard the No-Ad sunscreen is really great and a lot cheaper too.  I've used it and like it but it's a lotion and I prefer the spray to it.  :o)

I agree with Carole about the swimsuits. They totally block the rays and you end up only needing to use sunblock on hands, wrists, feet, face and back of the neck (a good wide brimmed hat will do the head). Look here: http://www.cwdkids.com/. Their prices are pretty good too.

For me, sunblock's got to be UVA AND UVB protection. Neutragena is the only brand I will buy. Reapplying is key, even if it's waterproof. I heard on TV that adults need a full ounce of sunscreen for their bodies. At that rate, I'd go broke!

Have fun!!
