We have the cutest 5 month old female kitten. She is special, you know when you find that diamond in the rough when it comes to pets, right? Well, she is one of those kinds of cats. My vet has suggested she might be part Maine Coon and my mom says she believes it. She even has 6 toes on all four paws. Her 6 toes on all four caused quite a stir at the vet and many techs had to come see cause I guess it's really rare.

Anyway, she even plays different then my other two cats. One thing she does that is driving me insane is she drop this ratty, dirty little mouse into their water dish. My kids ask me why she does this and I do not know what to tell them. It's funny but frustrating all at the same time. At least it's not the toilet, right? LOL A few things I have mulled over is, she is trying to give it some water. Or maybe she is trying to drown it? LOL She will stand there and watch it. Won't take it out. She actually does this to a few other toys but they aren't the kind that soak up the water or looks dirty after I take those out. This one she does it a lot!! Which is what is causing me frustration. LOL Cause I may have just fixed new water and she messes up the water so I have to redo it.

So, can anyone really tell me WHY? WHY does she do this? :-)

My own cat does this with his stuffed moose. It is a toy he came with as a baby and 5 years later, he still has it, as ratty as it is, I can't get rid of it. Most times he brings it to me and sometimes he tries to drown it - it seems when he is mad at me, he will drown it. I really don't know the "real" reason he does it, I just deal with it. It's not that big a deal to me.

I have found that kitties do some weird stuff, but that's their nature. THey're just being a cat. I have a kitty who does that too, and it's just cute. I don't worry about it.

It might just be the hunting instinct too-like he's waiting for you to be proud that he "killed" his prey!

I know this board is about kitties, but this reminds me of my dog. He's a chihuahua and I took him in a couple years ago after my family couldn't take care of him. He came with this little stuffed bear. It's a cute little toy, but I've never seen a dog be so gentle and loving toward a toy before. He carries it in his mouth and when he puts the bear down, it's really gently, like he doesn't want to hurt his "baby". It's so cute though! He has this big gigantic stuffed cow that he just grabs in his mouth and shakes his head and beats the thing. It's just funny how they interact with their toys.

Welcome to cats & kittens.

I have one of these too.  Every once in a while, Tim feels the need to drown the toy mice in the water dish.  I wasn't sure who it was until I caught him doing it.  Doesn't do anything overt - just drops it in the dish and stares - like he is expecting the mouse to do tricks if it gets wet.  I don't mind the string mice, but he will sometimes drown the stuffed catnip toy and that is a little more disgusting - gotta ring it out...blech.

There is no easy answer.  Like all things with cat - sometimes you just have to go with it.

And I love the toes - and 6 per paw is alot.  Makes her VERY special - a true Hemingway cat or polydactyl.

When cats drop a toy in their food or water it is a hunting instinct.  They are bringing their "prey" to their "safe" eating spot.  In the wild cats will often do that so they can go back and eat it later.  I'm often finding mice in the food and water dishes. LOL
