We have 1.5 or so year old male cat - who showed up on our doorstep - I think someone dropped him off = b/c he doesn't act like other ferals in our neighborhood.

He continues to PEE & sometims Poop all over our house & clothes & linens... even tho he goes outside too. It does get worse when we go out of town - but I don't think he's particularly more threatened by my other 2 kitties - I think it's something else!

My sis n law -- thinks maybe he was never "properly" litter trained. Could it be? and if so, is there anything we can do?

We've got the fluorescent light & the felimax spray =---- I LOVE cats - but simply can not spend my days going round & round cleaning up after him.

Alternative is to force him to be outside, i guess....

First, he will need to be evaluated by a vet (urine tests, etc) to make sure it's not a medical issue - about 95% of cats who urinate & defecate innapropriately have some degree of infection and if it's not addressed, it will continue to happen.

On the behavioral front, you can try adding another litter box, try using feliway diffusers in the areas where he is going, sometimes it helps to put a small bowl of food on/near where he is going unless it's all different areas.

Good luck!

I agree with Cat - first thing is a vet check.

After that, try keeping him in his own room and using Cat Attract Litter.  Once he is using the box religiously, then start letting him back out into the house.  It could be the location of the box, it could be that someone is cornering him in the room and he feels threatened.

Pam Johnson-Bennett is a behaviorist that writes books about cats.  Check your local library - she has written a lot about this subject and how to work with it.

I agree with the others that he needs to see a vet.

Also it may be he doesn't like the type of litter, the box(if it's covered get rid of the cover), or location.  If he doesn't feel like he has an escape route he may feel threatened.

Also agree with the advise on Pam Johnson Bennett's books.  They're a must for the library of a cat owner.
