(This is a cross-post, I need all the help I can get!) I am freaking out here. My son let a neighborhood stray kitty into our home about a week ago. We have a 12 week old kitten (actually one of her kittens, we fostered her litter after she abandoned them and adopted them all out but our Sam.) I caught her and took her to a local rescue and they checked her over and informed me she had a terrible flea problem. I immediately checked my kitten and sure enough, he's completely infested! I've tried the Hartz stuff that you put on the shoulder blades and it barely made a dent. I bathed him in Dawn and that did nothing. I used a flea bomb (the fleas are now eating my children alive) and bought a carpet powder that is supposed to kill fleas. Nothing.

What else can I do? My kitten also has a distended belly, he may just be a chubster and I didn't notice it before but I am scared he has worms now. I made an appointment with the vet but couldn't get in until Thursday. Is there any way I could tell before I take him in?

Do you see anything that looks kind of like grains of rice around his bottom or left on areas where he sleeps? That's a sure sign of tape worms from fleas.

You need to get something like Advantage or Frontline to put on him. The cheap Hartz stuff doesn't work. I think you can get Advantage w/o an Rx now at places like Petsmart.

For the house, the Fleabusters powder is supposed to be most effective. http://www.amazon.com/Fleabusters-Rx-Fleas-Plus/dp/B000MS6Q2Q

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm going to PetSmart tomorrow and see if I can get some. My poor little guy is just miserable.

I've checked his stool and favorite spots and haven't seen anything that resembles rice or worms. I'm hopeful that he's just a chub. I'll talk to the vet about it but this did put my mind at ease. Thanks so much for your response!

Welcome to the board! I'm going to second what the other poster has said and also add that all of the stuff you mentioned that you used is VERY toxic to you and your pets - I've seen cats die from using the Hartz products and bombs really do nothing but get all over EVERYTHING. Advantage (bought only from a vet) is the fastest flea kill product out there and the Fleabusters works wonderfully and is not toxic.

Welcome to Cats and Kittens.  We had a horrible flea problem when we moved into this house.  I had never seen so many fleas.  I used the Fleabuster and it worked great.  I also treated the cats with a squeeze on product from my vet.  I got rid of the fleas thank goodness.   I treated my home with the Fleabuster for a couple of years to keep the fleas away and have never had them again.  I'm sure if your kitten had fleas, he has tapeworms.  You can get wormer from you vet to take care of them.  It may take a couple of doses to get rid of all of them.  If you have never wormed him he may have roundworms too, so I would get an all in one wormer to get everything.

Good luck!
