Kitty Feeding Questions

We bought an auto feeder and my husband set it up for our kitty Sam. I posted here about our recent flea plague and my concerns he may have worms because his belly seems rather large and distended. However, my hubby just suggested that he may have that tummy because he's been eating so much. Should I pull his food up and only feed him smaller amounts? At 12 weeks old, how much should be eating?

Thanks for looking!

From the looks of your signature, you are pregnant? For your safety and your baby's safety, get the kitten dewormed fully. We assume that most kittens are born with worms and there are some worms that can harm humans (roundworms, giardia...etc)...

Also, cats should not auto-feed, they should be on a schedule of twice a day feedings and preferably canned food from the start. Cats are carnivores and thrive on an all-meat diet, dry foods cannot provide that. Auto-feeding can lead to obesity and potential health issues secondary to the obesity such as diabetes, heart disease, etc.

Thank you for the advice! What amount should he be eating at those feedings? My vet suggested we put him on dry kitten food mixed with wet until he was around 10 weeks but I still have some wet food left.

I am pregnant. He has a vet appointment on Thursday so I'll definately have him wormed and get an rx for Advantage. I'll also try the Flea Busters. Thanks so much!

You can try 1/2 can twice a day and 1/4 cup dry once a day (if you are going to feed dry...) If he starts to gain weight (like becoming overweight), you can cut it back from there.

I would feed your kitten at least three to four times a day as he is still growing.  I feed my cats twice a day and leave their food down about an hour so they all have time to finish it up.  I have an elderly cat that is thin and he gets fed three or four times a day if he will eat.  Feed the best food you can afford and canned kitten food if possible for the most part.  Getting rid of his worms needs to be done do your aren't feeding them too.  The worms will suck all of the nutrients out of your kitten and Sam can have serious problems if he is heavily infested with them.
